UFF call to action: legislative session week of 3/22

Help fight for your rights as educators by contacting your state senator and representative regarding the latest bills being pushed through the Florida Legislature. These harmful bills contain numerous provisions that take away educators’ freedom.

Urgent action is needed on the companion bills SB 1014 / HB 835 and the UFF Legislative Toolkit makes it easy to learn more and take action (included are bill overviews, talking points, letter templates and more).

Call to action – Please take note of these legislative updates!

This year is a very busy year for anti-union bills in the FL Legislature. Next year is an election year so they are cramming a lot in this year. Some of them are “zombie” bills that show up each legislative session. Some are outright blatant in their attempt to undermine union power, collective bargaining, and the pension system in the state. We need all members to get involved.

Note: our parent union, United Faculty of Florida (UFF), is an issue-based, not party-affiliated union. They will work with both sides of the aisle to protect education interests and union interests in FL. Likewise, our legislators need to hear from union members regardless of their party affiliation (or no affiliation).

UFF has provided a 5 page PDF on the various anti-union legislation going through committees and coming to the floor. It is looking very bad for a number of them. Please review the PDF for details:

Here is a step-by-step PDF on how you can get involved by tracking bills and contacting your legislators:

FEA Call to Action

Florida Education Association is closely monitoring the 2021 Florida Legislative session. Here are some ways to get involved and take action for Florida students, educators, and public education:

From UFF — Urgent action: Defend your Union

Senate Bill 78 is part of a national push by billionaire-funded think tanks to make the unionization process needlessly complicated and to suppress union membership. If passed, the legislation would put administration in charge of the membership process for the first time in Florida’s history and prevent union members from automatically renewing their membership, endangering your union protection.

Leadership in the Florida Senate is pushing this union-busting legislation in the middle of a pandemic. This legislation not only sets a dangerous precedent, but it is also an insult to the working people keeping Florida functioning (like educators and first responders, who oppose this move).

Call your senator and tell them to vote no on SB 78. (Simple “I oppose Senate bill 78” messages are the most effective.)

Grievance filed

On January 29, 2021, the FUSA Council met and voted unanimously to file a Class-Action Grievance. Please see the message sent to faculty by FUSA President Elizabeth Key-Raimer on Feb. 9th for background information on this decision.

Over the next several months, FUSA and the Administration will work through the grievance process as outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (Article 11). We will send updates to faculty on progress and meeting dates when scheduled. Information will also be shared on the website.

Please reach out to your campus FUSA representatives with any questions. You may also submit questions through the FUSA website.

Get Out the Vote! Volunteer for FEA Days of Action

From Andrew Spar, President of the Florida Education Association (FEA):

We need your help. We need members who have some time to volunteer for one of our days of action in which we will call friendly union members to remind them to vote. This is all done virtually, so members can call from the comfort of their own home. All anyone has to do is sign up and we will contact them.
